PsoriasisHeadlines recently conducted some market research into psoriasis and its treatments amongst both psoriasis patients and hairdressers. We found the results of these surveys interesting and wanted to share the results with you.
Psoriasis in the Salon - hairdressers:
- 82% of hairdressers surveyed have encountered a customer with scalp psoriasis
- 43% of respondents felt very confident in recognising scalp psoriasis
- 43% of respondents are seeing customers with scalp psoriasis once a month or more
- 23% of hairdressers questioned reported an increase in the frequency of customers with scalp psoriasis
- 85% of those questioned felt they had the ability to discuss scalp psoriasis with their customers
- 93% stated that they would be keen to learn more about the condition
- 95% surveyed felt comfortable initiating a discussion about scalp psoriasis
- 92% felt it is part of their job role to provide information and advice on the condition
- 81% of hairdressers questioned had heard of medicated shampoo treatments
- 78% of hairdressers who would refer customers for a specialist opinion said that they would direct customers to their GP

Psoriasis in the Salon - psoriasis patients:
- 40% of those surveyed stated that their scalp psoriasis made them feel depressed
- 30% of those surveyed stated that their scalp psoriasis made them feel anxious
- 60% say they experience a “flare up” of their symptoms constantly
- 47% report that the frequency of their symptoms has increased in the last two years
- For many people (53%) greasy, un-styleable hair is what bothers them the most about their treatment
yet…
- only two percent of those surveyed would discuss their treatment options with a hairdresser
- 66% said they feel anxious that their hairdresser will notice flakiness
but…
- 56% claim that they would want the hairdresser to say something and discuss the issue
- 14% of those surveyed reported a negative experience at the hairdressers during a flare-up
- When experiencing a flare-up 45% of those surveyed would consider going to the hairdressers for a cut and blow dry and 65% would consider going to the hairdressers for a hair cut
- Almost 60% identified a short-contact preparation as their preferred treatment regime, with the most preferred (44%) treatment formulation being a shampoo
